Last week, I was talking to my therapist. We were talking about why I move through life at what can look like 10x speed. Yet to me, it doesn’t feel rushed at all.
In business and authorship, this has served me very well… in romantic relationships (the subtext of my conversation in therapy) it has served me less well 😂.
How can I do big, bold things and dive into a world of uncertainty… yet feel so certain about where I’m headed?
As authors, navigating through an uncertain world and building the future WE want is a daily struggle.
Belief that your book will sell and make readers happy before you even start page 1
Confidence that your book description will bring in just the right readers
The guts to move forward with an audacious marketing campaign, because you hope it will spark the attention your book deserves
How can we take decisive action to move our publishing career forward when we just have our feelings to rely on?
FEEL MORE CONFIDENT, they say.
BELIEVE IN YOURSELF, they say.
Screw that, I say. Let’s be time travellers instead 😈.
The Time Traveller’s Oath
You are a time traveller.
Everything you want and more has come true.
That bestselling book? It’s sitting on your desk with a blurb from your favorite author.
That beautiful vacation? You just got a reminder email from your airline. Your flight leaves tomorrow, and it’s headed to a gorgeous tropical island (thankfully, not Epstein’s).
That loving partner, even sweeter than a cinnamon roll hero? He’s beta-reading your latest book on the couch next to you, and he’s got a gray scruff and sparkle in his eyes that makes you melt inside.
Everything you want and more.
It’s all there.
I am a time traveller.
Every day, I time travel to the future I want for myself and the people I love.
It’s already happened on my timeline.
The present just needs to catch up to the future.
That’s why I work so hard.
Sounds delusional?
Maybe. But if you were a time traveller like me, you’d already see it.
The future wouldn’t be something you’d have to believe in. Something you’d have to feel certain about.
It would be something you've already lived.
So, time travel with me! There’s a simple oath you have to take to begin your journey as a time traveller, and it may just change your life.
Here it is:
“I vow to be a time traveller.
To hold the future in my heart, as if it’s already written in the stars.
I vow to act with the clarity of hindsight in advance.
I will not wait to be chosen.
I will not wait to feel ready.
I am already living the life I saw in my dreams.
The world may not see it yet. But I have. And it’s enough.
Because I am not guessing. I’m remembering.
I vow to time travel with courage, with magic, and with a slightly smug grin into the version of my life that was always meant to be.”
So… now, time travel to the author life of your dreams. What do you see?
I’ll see you all soon for another episode of the Beyond the Book Podcast.
In the meantime, don’t forget…
Together we are boundless,
Michael Evans

@inesjohnsonishavingabreakdown has a great post about the power of daily affirmations: https://ineswrites.substack.com/p/the-power-of-daily-affirmations. As someone who used to journal, I feel like this was a great visual reminder that should get back to journaling with affirmations in mind.
