You already have all of the superpowers within you. You just don’t know it yet…
When I was 16, I attended my first large book event as a signing author.
It was a wild experience.
Thousands of people. All of my books (I brought about 40) sold out in 2 hours. I had a splitting headache by lunchtime.
But it was invigorating.
I had never really put myself out into the world as an author. And here I was wearing a cape and standing proud with my stories along with the dozens of other authors at the signing.
Truth be told, I was scared to market my stories.
I was embarrassed. Scared that I’d get made fun of in my high school.
I thought I had to learn a ton before I could sell. I thought I needed to have a bigger backlist.
And endless more excuses.
But it all really boiled down to one thing:
I thought my books weren’t good enough.
I felt that I wasn’t good enough.
Out of desperation I started marketing my stories. I couldn’t keep spending money on covers and editing without making anything back.
And all I really wanted was the freedom to spend time telling stories I love.
All of a sudden, my self-worth got tied up in the success of my stories.
I obsessed over my sales ranking, page reads, and reviews. I started to feel like no one would consider me a real author unless I had hundreds of reviews and close to 5 stars.
I ended up drowning in work. Rapid releasing a new book each month. Spending tons of money on ads. And I left it all feeling burnt out and with empty pockets.
Things got even worse for me. I pivoted to YouTube, vlogging my life at college and eventually performing viral stunts that endangered my life.
I still remember the moment that I crashed my car into the median traveling 60 miles per hour. I had fallen asleep behind the wheel after spending the night filming a video in a snow storm with no supplies (one of many attempts to go viral).
I was living by the rules of the algorithm. And I had turned my life into an algorithmic shit show.
I had successfully transformed from someone who was too shy to share my stories with the world to someone who would do anything to make a living as a creative.
But in the process, I had lost myself.
Luckily, my wake up call didn’t damage me physically (although it did damage the car).
I had no choice but to do the one thing I didn’t have the courage yet to do.
Be myself.
I started sharing one of my core superpowers with the world: community building (Fanatic Builder).
Then things came together. I began livestreaming my life and spent 1,000 hours sharing me and my college best friend’s travels across America as we played scavenger and manhunt. Many of our fans spent hours each night with us. It was the first time I had managed to make a living as a creative.
Eventually, my passion for science fiction called me back to the indie author world writing dystopian novels again.
But my superpowers never left me. They were there all along.
I may not have known it when I was 16 – but as a storyteller, I was always a superhero. And you are too.
